I'm excited to announce I've been approved to graduate from Kaiser Permanente's Performance Improvement Program! This means I'm now a certified Performance Improvement Advisor. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to learn about improvement and change management from an internal organizational perspective. Because of this experience I feel better equipped to tackle the innovation and/or/versus improvement conversation. From what I learned, they can go hand in hand.

My name is Laura Janisse and I work at Kaiser Permanente's Innovation Consultancy. I am a human-centered media designer who loves to think about people and systems (specifically the healthcare system).

Anchored in design thinking, my work explores the intersection between innovation and improvement, and design and healthcare. My role spans from leading design research projects, to leading communication design projects, to acting as the improvement advisor on performance improvement initiatives.

Trained in media design, I use various mediums to create project-specific methodologies and/or tools that encourage teams to deeply connect with the contexts and the users we design for. My work aims to encourage new ways of thinking about and addressing challenges that exist within healthcare, with the ultimate goal being to create meaningful impact within healthcare.

Previous healthcare projects have focused on: improving medication administration quality and safety on post-op surgery units, rethinking the power and potential of personal health records for teenagers living with chronic illnesses, and defining universal design solutions to positively impact the process of aging.

Experience outside of health and wellness include projects focused in Food and Beverage, Digital Lifestyle, and Cultural Transformation with a range in scope - from branding, to strategy, concept development, evaluative and to service/experience design.

Communication design experience includes designing for The Innovation Learning Network Organization, Ascension Health, and Art Center College of Design.

Teaching experience includes leading an introduction to graphic design high school course at Portland Waldorf School, and co-running an after school art program for 1st-5th graders at Cedarwood Waldorf School.

I hold a BFA Honors in Communication Design from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland and a MFA in Media Design Research from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Project Blux looks to better understand why there’s a decrease in outdoor play - Is it due to heightened media exposure, or is outdoor play just not considered “manly” in young boys’ eyes? The goal was to encourage new ways for young boys to re-enage with the outdoor world. How can we inspire young boys and excited them about being outside, along with teaching them important current issues the world is facing today?

Secondary, primary and design research probes were used during phase 1 research. Key opportunities emerged during synthesis and led the team to create a concept prototype, later titled Blux. Blux is meant to communicate how a product could sense light, wind, sound and motion by making curious noises and changes in skin color and patterns that would connect with young boys.

Contextual and behavioral research on post-operative surgery units uncovered the lack of effective communication tools among key stakeholders - doctors, nurses, patients and families. Because of this, nurses become the information hub - doctors asking about medication, patients asking about the doctor, families asking about the patient, etc. How might stakeholders be part of one conversation that could potentially improve patient safety and recovery?

Design research probes gave nurses the opportunity to share their world - the delights and pains of their shift, the joys and frustrations of patient management, and how they feel when it comes to catching up and improving their workflow. Lack of communication was their biggest complaint.

Nurses revealed that because of the lack of communication structure, they fear medical errors might occur. The Patient Pod system is a design concept prototype that standardizes and unifies key stakeholder communication. Each stakeholder interacts with the system through a different portal specifically designed for their needs.

I collaborated with the Innovation Consultancy as a design researcher on KP MedRite. The project goal was to gain insight into medication administration. What were the challenges and successes? What potentially contributed to errors? What could help ensure a safer experience for both the nurse and patient?

The project started with a phase of human centered research around medication safety - the team observed, shadowed and interviewed nurses on post-op surgery units. The following phase kicked-off with a deep dive workshop - brainstorming and prototyping ideas from field learnings with frontline staff, management and leadership. Top ideas were then tested in the field - a medication room light system, a medication machine safety zone, and a safety vest to protect nurses while delivering medications. Concept iterations were made to ensure full exploration of each idea. In the end, the ideas that made most impact were the medication safety vest/sash, a process that is optimized for the nurse/patient relationship, and the medication machine safety zone. These directions were pushed further and tested, and are now known as KP MedRite.

Read more here on the Innovation Consultancy's KP MedRite website page:
As of 2006, there were approximately 7000 deaths per year in the United States due to medication errors- about one medication approximately one medication error per patient per day; some errors are benign such as being one minute late giving a medication to catastrophic such as errors resulting in death.

Through a collaboration between Kaiser Permanente's National Quality, KP HealthConnect, Patient Care Services, and the Innovation Consultancy (IC), we tackled this tough issue using the IC's Innovation Method. With our nurses as co-designers, we learned that the medication administration process is unclear, chaotic and full of interrupts. The evidence-based design is simple, elegant, and safe. We call this innovation KP MedRite.
